Duty or Joy?

Is it better to be busy doing something for the Lord even if we do it only from a sense of duty? In Psalm 37:4-5 " Delight yourself in the Lordand he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act." We see that we are to delight in the Lord, commit our way and trust Him before doing anything else, but this is not as easy as sounds.

Our human tendencies are self centered and short sighted as well as forgetful. No wonder later on in Psalm 51:12 King David says "Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit." We look at our circumstance and act accordingly, forgetting what the Lord did an hour ago; but our loving Father is most interested in bringing us closer to Him, He wants us to find intimacy in Him, by delighting in Him and committing our ways to Him.

To do things because it is my duty as a Christian is to think that I am good enough to meet God's standard, which I am not - nobody is. We so easily say we love the Lord, let's act on it then! Our only duty should be to remember His love and goodness and let that be the source of everything we do, giving glory to Him alone.
